Everybody loves a nice, big, classic chicken schnitzel for lunch or dinner. As boring as it may be it is my all time favorite meal. No matter where I go I will most likely get a chicken schnitzel.

So that leads us to ask the question, where is the best chicken schnitzel in Sydney. I will say that pubs generally do a better schnitzel then most restaurants and usually have bigger servings (always a bonus for big eaters like me).

I have eaten chicken schnitzel at many places but the few I remember and have continued going to are:

1. Kogarah Hotel
The schnitzel here is one of the best I have had and it is huge. You get two large pieces of homemade chicken schnitzel, chips and salad and the sauce is free, which is another bonus as most places these days charge extra for gravy or any other sauce. All for a good price of $15.

2. Mikes Grill at the Royal Hotel
The Royal Hotel is in Sutherland and has recently opened up its very own Mikes Grill (which moved from The Crest in Sylvania and as two more free standing restaurants also in Sylvania). The schnitzel here is also huge and it is up there with one of the best I have ever had. It is $18 and comes with chips and salad.

3. Sidnees Cafe Burwood
Now this had to be the biggest I have ever had. It tastes as good as the other two I mentioned above but it is so much bigger. I usually force myself to get through the meal even if I am full (simply because it tastes so good and I have no self control to say no to myself) but I find it impossible to finish the chicken schnitzel almost every time. I don't remember exactly how much it was but I'm almost certain it was about $17 or $18.

So there you have it, three places where I think serve the best chicken schnitzel. If you know of any others where you think have the best be sure to let the readers know because if they are like me they would love to try new places and new schnitzel.

Not sure you can have a "classic" chicken schnitzel as a schnitzel is traditionally veal. The chicken schnitzel is mostly an Aussie thing because chicken is far more available and cheaper than veal. The Austrian Schnitzelhaus in Gladesville will, if you pre-order, serve the Schnitzel Challenge. Its a kilo of schnitzel plus chips, sauce and one litre of beer for $55. Must be completed in under an hour and chundering is not permitted. Apart from this, they sell a variety of chicken, veal and pork schnitzels.

Here's a tip for beginners. It's pronounced shhhnitzel.

Not "snitzel" and definitely not "snitchel'.

As a general rule, if someone can't say it or spell it, they can't make it.

Given the choice I think I'd opt for chicken anyway, so long as they don't cook it too dry. The Bazaar Beer Cafe in St Leonards also does a beaut chicken schnitzel, plus a few good drops to wash it down.

I am familiar with veal schnitzel but you don't find that in most or nearly all pubs and cafe style restaurants like you do the chicken. So in that sense chicken schnitzel is a classic.

I have heard of schnitzelhaus but have not been there yet. But it is definately on my to do list.

The chicken schnitzels at the Bavarian Bier Cafe in Parramatta are second to none! The price at around $24 is worth paying as they are so good! Washed down with a beer...has to be one of the best meals I've had in a long time.

The newly renovated "The Three Swallows Hotel" at Bankstown has a great chicken schnitzel on their menu and it is huge too. The bistro/beer garden is a really nice spot to sit, especially for lunch mid-week.

I find that even something as simple as schnitzel is often a gamble, so it’s nice that there’s this article to try and locate a quality one. One of my friends actually made schnitzels from scratch that tasted better than anything I’ve ever bought, though! Maybe I'll post the recipe up.
