Deciding what to do in Adelaide on New Year's Eve is your last big decision for 2016. It may also be your most important. You could end up with a lifetime of love, or on the front page of The Advertiser in a riot at Glenelg. Choose wisely as the party only happens once.

It would be impossible to list the full range of New Year's Eve functions around Adelaide, as nearly every hotel and restaurant will be having a NYE bash. Many people choose to host a New Year's Eve party at home, and just invite some close friends for drinks. There are so many fun things to do on New Year's Eve in Adelaide that I've just picked some of the highlights. Feel free to add other suggestions in the comments.

City of Adelaide New Year's Eve Party
Elder Park is the traditional location for the Adelaide City Council's free New Year's Eve party, and it's back again this year with all the bells, whistles and fireworks. In fact there's double value this year with two lots of fireworks in Elder Park. the first NYE fireworks take place at 9pm, so families with small children can enjoy this spectacular fun for kids and still get home early. With free public transport from 5pm until 5am, there's no need to bring your car either.

A flock of food vendors will be available from 6pm with a range of global cuisine on offer, and three beer gardens to cope with the demand for drinks. From 7pm expect a range of free things to do including live music from the rotunda, roving performers, and family entertainment from the street theatre stage.

For the full program of free live music and entertainment, head on over to the City of Adelaide New Year's Eve 2016 page or on Facebook . No BYO alcohol permitted.

New Year's Eve at Glenelg
Always a popular place for younger people, New Year's Eve at Glenelg won't disappoint this year. You'll find free live entertainment, free activities for kids, and fireworks on the foreshore - at 9.30 (both Brighton Jetty and Glenelg) and midnight (Glenelg only). Dry event - no alcohol permitted.

Victor Harbor NYE Celebrations
The sleepy City of Victor Harbor website barely mentions New Year's Eve except for road closures , but luckily there are celebrations there too. Find loads of free things to do at Warland Reserve from 7.30pm - face painting, a petting zoo and free bubble mania by Mr. Oopy, together with a concert packed with live performances for the NYE Celebrations. No alcohol - dry area.

Semaphore New Year's Eve Party
As part of the Semaphore Summer Carnival there are two free fireworks shows for New Year's Eve on the Semaphore foreshore. There's no mention of other entertainment, but the Semaphore Amusement Park is always full of fun things to do.

Mars Bar Adelaide New Year's Eve Party
Gay and lesbian people are just as fond of a party as the rest of us, and for them the Mars Bar Adelaide New Year's Eve party is the place to be. The Mars Bar is an Adelaide gay and lesbian icon, celebrating their 40th birthday this year.

The NYE party kicks off from 10pm with the dress code of "Summer". That's code for "dress in as little as possible without getting done for indecent exposure", and for just $15 you get to party until 5am (and a gift on arrival). DJ Josh, Scott Tanner, DJ Simon, Adrian Mendo, VJK Happy Emo, DJ Kerry, and De-ann Gilbert will be towering from the high altar, pumping their unique takes of music for their acolytes far below.

Other Fun Things to Do on New Year's Eve
The only pageant on NYE is at Normanville, which works out well if you want to catch the NYE celebrations at Victor Harbor too. Another place to escape the city is to the Wallaroo Foreshore New Year's Eve party , or just go somewhere special and watch the city lights with a loved one.

Catch a lively time at a Latin New Year's Eve Extravaganza , or get a taste of Spain at a Spanish themed New Year's Eve Party . Things will be more sedate in lounge suits at the Austrian Club - at least until the celebratory schnapps starts flowing.

If you've got money to burn, head for historic Electra House where you can spend more than $300 per person on having a good time at your New Year's Eve party. You'll find many other NYE party options too at restaurants and pubs here .

All the best for 2017!
