The rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney is fierce but one thing Melbournians do undeniably better than our northern neighbours is winter! Rather than complain about the cold, we wrap ourselves in gorgeous alpaca wool scarves from local craft markets , open the bottles of Yarra Valley merlot we'd been saving and head off on ski trips to Mount Hotham and Mount Buller .

Melbourne has the cosiest, hole-in-the wall restaurants with slow-cooked, roasted, rich and decadent comfort foods . There's winter sports and festivals , a literary culture that encourages us to snuggle down with good book and groovy jazz bars where it's almost compulsory to don a warm felt beret.

So, what's the best activity this fine city has to offer when the temperature gets low? It's free, it's simple, it's - go for a walk.

Crazy! you say, and I see your point. It's raining, dark, shoes will get soggy, hair will frizz, but trust me a wholesome nourishing walk is the perfect antidote to all the city's drizzling grey dreariness.

5 reasons why walking in Melbourne is the ultimate winter activity

1. Warmth
Ironically, by going out into the cold, you'll warm up. After that first 500-800 meters of movement, you'll already be thinking about peeling off the layers of beanies and gloves.

2. Health
By walking through winter, you won't have the mammoth task of kick starting a fitness regime later on in the year. Activity trackers like Jawbone , Garmin 's and Fitbit can make the walk rewarding. MapMyWalk can show you how far you've gone.

3. Community
People are generally friendly and cheerful when you pass them on a walking track. Much more so than what they are when walking down the street. A polite nod or hearty hello can bring some happiness to your day and you'll feel good by giving a greeting also.

4. Taxes
You pay for the upkeep of paths and parks so you may as well use them. The more people out and about, the more incentive there is for councils to review and improve facilities. Walking is a great way to keep an eye on your neighbourhood, even if that just means taking a peek at other peoples' garden designs.

5. Appreciation
After conquering the kilometres, the slippery surfaces and the steep climbs, everything at home gets a new glow. After a hearty walk, a hot shower melts through to your bones, clean clothes feel like they've been freshly toasted and spending the rest of your weekend in your pyjamas watching NetFlix comes guilt free because you've earned it.

To support your wintry Melbourne walk, the not-for-profit organisation Victoria Walks has an excellent mobile friendly Walking Maps site with reviews and track listings. Also try the Yarra River Trail , Golden Mile Heritage Trail or the Darebin Bushlands .
