What's Happening Here? Exhibition and Public Program

Have you ever looked at an abstract artwork and wondered to yourself (or perhaps out loud), 'what's happening here'? That is part of the inspiration for the name of an exhibition currently running at the Town Hall Gallery in Hawthorn.

The name also acknowledges an apparent trend in Melbourne of young artists gravitating towards this style of art.

Featuring the works of women artists regarded as some of Melbourne's most interesting emerging abstract painters, What's Happening Here? celebrates non-representational painting. The works exude vigour, colour and freedom.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 18th March to Sunday 7th May, at the Town Hall Gallery, 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn. The Town Hall Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Friday, and from 11am to 4pm on weekends (closed Mondays).

Admission is free.

The Town Hall Gallery has some exciting public programs running in conjunction with the exhibition.

On Wednesday 29th March, from 6.30-8.30pm, there is a FREE screening of the definitive documentary on the New York school of painters from 1940-1970 - Painters Painting. Released in 1973, the documentary has never before been available on DVD.

In this insightful two-hour film, renowned painters including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning are interviewed in their studios.

RSVP to this event is essential. Click here for more information and to RSVP.

On Saturday 8th April, from 9am to 12 noon, let your inner artist run wild as you join gallery staff and the Boroondara Parks and Gardens team for a tour of the Maranoa Gardens in Balwyn in this Walk and Sketch session. A hidden secret in its suburban setting, Maranoa Gardens includes rainforest areas, temperate woodland, cottage gardens and other ecological zones. You will learn about plants, flowers and wildlife, and also have time to sketch or photograph.

The session costs $5.50 - BYO art materials. Meet at the entrance to the gardens, in Kireep Road, at 8.50am.
