What to Do in Perth on a Wet Winter Day

Perth is renowned for its outdoor activities whether it is cycling by the river, kayaking or visits to the beach – activities that are lovely in summer but difficult to enjoy on a wet blustering winter day.

Luckily, there are indoor options to keep you entertained although you may get a bit wet while travelling in between the different venues. Just bring a good umbrella or poncho and you will stay (mostly) dry.

1) WA Museum**

Located at Perth Cultural Centre, James Street, Perth, the Western Australia museum houses the State's premier scientific and cultural collection. Between 6th of June 2015 to 30th of August 2015, the museum will hold an exhibition showcasing the lost diggers of Vignacourt, a small French village. Photographs by the Thuillier family covers many of the significant aspects of Australian involvement on the Western front. The museum is open seven days a week from 9.30am to 5.00pm. 2) Art Gallery of Western Australia



Located at the Perth Cultural Centre, pop into the art gallery after the WA museum and stay dry amongst the beautiful artwork. The gallery houses the State Art Collection which includes one of the world's finest collections of Indigenous Art, Australian art and some International designs. Entry from the city is best taken via the Perth Train Station and Roe Street pedestrian overpass or from Barrack Street via the James Street Mall. 3) Scitech



Located at City West Centre, corner of Railway Street and Sutherland Street, come and marvel at what science has achieved. A great place for kids and adults alike to explore the wonders of science, visit the Scitech Planetarium with a mega 180 degree dome and surround sound featuring shows on a range of astronomy topics. There are also current feature exhibitions including the Rio Tinto innovation central showcasing the latest in innovation and design allowing you to have your actions mimicked by a robot or strike a pose to see yourself in 3D. Admission costs $17 for adults and $11 for children over 4. Fees includes entrance to the Scitech Planetarium, Science and Puppet Shows and feature exhibition entry. 4) Fremantle prison



Visit WA's only World Heritage listed building, and one of Australia's top attractions at Fremantle located 200m east of the Fremantle Markets. Go back in time to 1850s when the prison first started housing convicts and see how life in prison changed as time passed by until the closure of the prison in 1991. You can sign up for the Doing Time tour at $20 per adult with experienced guides or go on a Great Escapes Tour also for $20 to see where many dangerous escapes were attempted by convicts throughout the years. One of the highlights of Fremantle prison is the Tunnels Tour at $60 per adult. You will need to be dressed in a hardhat, boots and overalls as you descend 20 metres into the depths below. You will explore the submerged passageways accessible only by boat and discover artefacts from the days when working in the tunnels was hard labour for prisoners.
