Want a great place to buy some of the best Greek dips and nuts in Melbourne? Head to Oakleigh.

The suburb is mainly filled with people from the Greek speaking community. It is called Antipodes. Antipodes means the direct opposite to something - for example Melbourne and Greece. If you fold the map in a certain way, then Greece and Melbourne are opposite to each other.

Although, once upon a time as Melbourne was building itself, the suburb of Oakleigh threatened to become a small town all of its own before the inner-city of Melbourne furthered itself.

Oakleigh sits nearby to the Chadstone Shopping Complex, but Chadstone itself is located in the suburb of Malvern.

Eaton Mall is the hub centre of Oakleigh where many shops sell the best of Greek foods, but there are also Greek restaurants nearby which include live entertainment. The second stage of a 2.2million dollar Eaton Mall upgrade is about to take place next month.

There is also the Oakleigh Cricket Club located near to the cemetery, a police station, and the Oakleigh historical centre. The cemetery is home to a commemorative cenotaph to honour those that served during World War II which is scheduled to get a $6000 government grant upgrade.

The fish is fresh, the meat is red, and there are foods ripe for Greek food cooking everywhere in delis and other little shops. The local fresh-fish shop trader is happy to point you in the direction of one of the best cafes around. Although, you have to go there to experience it for yourself.

Following a complaint from a mother that a playground in Oakleigh was too dangerous for toddlers, the local government stepped in. According to a reader of the local Leader newspaper "They took out a perfectly good set of swings, a climbing frame, two slides and a cubby house and replaced it with a tiny bland lawyer-friendly little spinner".

If you're still keen in 2027, Oakleigh will open the first of two time capsules currently sealed beneath metal vaults bolted to the ground.

Oakleigh makes up a part of the City of Monash.
