Cocktails add colour and bring excitement to any dull night. A basic cocktail tends to be a concoction of a base spirit with one or two liquors or cordials. A Cosmopolitan, a Mai Tai, a Dry Martini or a Vodka Sunrise along with some other variations are the usual members of our drinking regime. But once in a blue moon, you will stumble across cocktails that will widen your eyes, drop your jaw and leave you absolutely bamboozled.

A discussion about cocktails that lead to some memorable, jaw-dropping moments should be commenced with a cocktail that goes with the name of Free Jamaica. This unique cocktail is conjured by blending rum, lime juice and falernum. Falernum is a syrup made from rum, ginger, lime, sugar and almond extract. A simple cocktail made from rum, lime and falernum. But what elevates this cocktail from mere ordinary to extraordinary is, wait for it, black bean soup. You read it right. This cocktail is topped with black bean soup, giving it the stature of a stupefying nature.

In America some bars offer cocktails with mustard as an ingredient while sporadic bars use bewildering ingredients like balsamic vinegar and porous pebbles. Some bars boast using peanut butter and jelly in their cocktails.

Now, how about a Prairie Chicken? This cocktail is a blend of gin, egg, salt and black pepper. I am not sure how wise it would be to consume raw eggs in a cocktail. Salmonella issues loom in the horizon.

The next in the list is the Cement Mixer, a wondrous blend of lime juice and Irish cream. A thickened drink that comes with the warning that it can get stuck in your teeth as you attempt to gulp it down. Delicious or not, this drink is certainly not my type.

Another equally if not more bewildering cocktail is the Duck Fart which is whipped up from rye, Irish cream and coffee liquer. The Duck Fart is said to be a warming drink consumed by Alaskans after ice-fishing and other freezing activities. Not sure how warm the drink would be but the name itself is quite eye-catching.

If the above have not stupefied you sufficiently, would you like to consider a Smoke Signal. This cocktail is a mixture of bacon-infused rye, chipotle syrup, cold- brewed coffee ice and porter. Unusual indeed. Maybe your eyes will pop out further at the mention of a Knot Twist which a stunning combination of malty genever, smoky Scotch, mescal, absinthe, maraschino and bitters.

All the above appear tame before the mind-boggling grilled cheese-flavour vodka introduced by a New York cheese maker. Merely entertaining the idea of a cheese flavoured vodka makes me nauseous.

Unusual ingredients indubitably have the potential to lend exotic flavours to our mundane, everyday cocktails, of course depending on the recipe and the skill of the bartender.

So, what is the strangest cocktail you have ever introduced your tastebuds to? Feel free to share with our avid readers.
