Looking for that country feeling in the middle of suburbia?

Five minutes drive from Cleveland, on Brisbane's bayside, is a garden coffee shop that sits high enough in the clouds to provide a beautiful view of green forests that will make you forget that you are only 20 minutes away from bustling Mt Gravatt.

West Mount Cotton Nursery and Gardens is an oasis in the desert. The scenery is complemented by birdsong and the natural fragrances from all the vegetation and flowers in full bloom. The scent from star jasmine on a hot day sure beats that of sweaty body parts.

As well, it is both dog, and peacock, friendly. Shadow is the resident Labrador and welcomes both two legged and four legged guests on arrival. On this day he welcomed a visiting Jug by the name of Sniffles, and they sat together enjoying a water bowl catching both the view and the breeze from the deck.

Never heard of a Jug? They are a cross between a Pug and Jack Russell, and this fellow certainly enjoyed his outing and making new friends, including Bill, the peacock.

Look, if you are looking for that generic, sanitised cafe experience this is not the place for you.

The cafe area butts the owners' living quarters and tends to be on the unsophisticated side. The gazebo, for example, is adorned with ladies handkerchiefs.

The menu is basic, though I can recommend the home made scones, which come with a small selection of other treats, washed down with a pot of tea.

These quirks only add to the charm of the experience and are a tangible reminder that 'less is more'.

After you've sat for an hour, and watched your blood pressure drop considerably, take the time to walk through the nursery area and take home some potted herbs or plants. May I add that the local honey I purchased at the serving counter is also delicious on my breakfast crumpets?

West Mount Cotton Nursery and Gardens are situated at 534 West Mount Cotton Road, Mount Cotton, and are open 7 days a week.

The gardens have been the site of wedding parties and other functions, though I just love the fact that they offer an escape from the hustle and bustle. Enjoy!
