Come and find your ancestors
More than one third of the population of Western Australia emigrated here from overseas. Coming from countries far and wide, migrants were keen to start a new life in this lucky country. Perhaps your family was among them?
The Western Australian Maritime Museum, located at Victoria Quay in Fremantle has a fantastic community display called the Welcome Walls. These walls are a wonderful lasting monument to honour the people from many different countries that now call Western Australia home.
The Welcome Walls of Fremantle were built as part of the 175th Anniversary Celebration of Western Australia in 2004. They were intended to be a one off project, but had such a huge public response and became so popular that they are now a permanent outdoor display.
You can search through more than four hundred panels containing thousands of names and maybe find the names of people you know or the names of your very own ancestors.

As part of your visit to the Western Australian Maritime Museum, Welcome Walls Display, you can get a Welcome Walls commemorative certificate. These certificates show the information as displayed on the Welcome Wall and are available to Welcome Wall registrants. The certificates cost $49.50 framed or $22.00 unframed.
You can also purchase a print of the passenger ships that arrived in the Port of Fremantle. These lovely prints are $69.95 framed or $29.95 unframed. The prints and certificates are available from the Western Australian Maritime Museum Shop and are a great souvenir of your visit.
The Western Australian Maritime Museum website has a very interesting dedicated corner where you can search for Welcome Wall names. This area displays the name, year of arrival, ship arrived on, and a few facts about the person or family. In this area you will also find the Welcome Wall panel number where you can go and find this name on the display.
The Western Australian Maritime Museum is open daily from 9.30am till 5pm, and from 1pm till 5pm on ANZAC Day. Closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday. Admission prices start at $10.00 for adults and $3.00 for children. The second Tuesday of every month - entry is by gold coin donation.
