Relax by the river
Sitting on the banks of the Nepean River near Penrith, Weir Reserve is a beautiful grassy picnic spot and popular wedding location. If you're looking for a peaceful picnic spot somewhere near Penrith, this is it.
The Nepean River has shaped the geography of the Penrith area over time, and this pretty park gets its name from the Nepean weir that it overlooks. There's plenty of grassy space for you to spread out a blanket, with spots in the sun or in the shade.
There are picnic tables if you don't feel like spreading out on the ground, and the amount of space makes this spot ideal for larger family gatherings as well. Public toilets are another useful inclusion.
The area is nice and flat - a great feature if you want an impromptu game of cricket or soccer - while there's a launching wharf down on the river for kayaks. If you'd rather someone else did the cooking, the Nepean Rowing Club sits right next door to the reserve. Open seven days for lunch and dinner, the club's bistro offers outdoor dining with enviable views.
It's quite peaceful sitting on a patch of grass and watching the water flow by, so it's no great surprise that Weir Reserve is also a popular spot for weddings. Two wedding areas are available for hire at a cost of $143 per hour. Weir Reserve Gazebo overlooks the Nepean River and is set amongst colourful roses (between September and March), while the Japanese Pavilion provides a garden wedding setting.
Weir Reserve also links up with the Great River Walk, an 8km track that follows the winding path of the Nepean. For more information on the facilities at Weir Reserve, visit the Penrith City Council website.
