The
Brisbane Institute of Art (BIA) is a community run non-profit creative arts centre located in Windsor – just a few kilometres north of the city. The BIA hosts a huge range of classes from painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, print-making and silversmithing classes. Classes run all through the year and you can pick from 18-week semester classes, 9-week short courses and also weekend workshops. You can check out what’s on offer
here. Weekend workshops range anywhere between $125 and $370 and the fees are all used to maintain the running costs of the institute.
One of the major appeals of the workshops run at BIA is that they are developed in close consultation and collaboration with artists from around Brisbane. Because of this the class structures are quite organic – the formal structure is there for beginners, but more advanced students are often encouraged to nurture their own concepts and turn to tutors to improve their technical skills.
There is also a gallery space at BIA where you can see a showcase of work by both students and emerging artists as well as established artists. The gallery space along with all the studio spaces including a computer lab and photographic darkroom are available to hire.
The BIA also runs an annual
art camp on
Moreton Island with tuition provided by Stephen Newton, a Brisbane-based artist known for his sculptures. The camp will be running from Friday October 16 to Sunday 18th October and the $295 fee covers transport, camp accommodation, food and tuition.
The BIA is not just for adults – they run a two-day
Childrens' art workshop in the September holidays. The workshop activities include painting, drawing, response to story telling, collage, montage, construction using wood, cardboard, sticks, string, and clay modeling.
