There is a new exhibition at Tandanya : The National Aboriginal Cultural Institute. 'We are the Young Women of this Land' is a photography exhibition that explores the many faces of Aboriginal women today.

"A few years ago I felt a strong motivation to photograph Aboriginal women, to capture their spirit, beauty and strength. My aim was to show the general public what is rarely sees and to inspire young Aboriginal women from communities across South Australia to achieve their dreams" - Sophie Abbott - Artist and Photographer

This exhibition features photographs of Aboriginal women between the ages of 17 and 31 years, they are a representative of contemporary Aboriginal women and their dreams. Some women are featured in very natural locations (typical of the Australian outback) in long formal gowns, while others are portrait shots of the women with seemingly traditional paint on their faces. The exhibition shows the strong connection between traditional Aboriginal culture, and contemporary lives.

If you head along to the exhibition on the 12th August then you will be there for the launch of the corresponding book. This book will feature the photographic works from the exhibition, and will be launched on the Friday at 6:30pm. This would be a great purchase for anyone who is interested in the portraits, buy the book to own not only a piece of art, but also an interesting coffee table book.

Each picture is accompanied but a small piece of text from its subject. This small spiel details their dreams and hopes for themselves, or a message to inspire others to dream and achieve their goals. 'We are the Young Women of this Land' aims to send a positive message to Aboriginal women that they are able to achieve the things that they dream of, and that they should continue to dream.

The exhibition is held at Tandanya, the oldest Aboriginal owned and run cultural centre in Australia. The centre tells many contemporary Aboriginal stories through its various exhibitions, and Abbots exhibition is no exemption. When you visit Tandanya check out some of the other fine exhibitions on show, and find out about future exhibitions to be held. There is a wealth of information to be found in the centre, and some thought provoking exhibitions.

'We are the Young Women of this Land' is showing at Tandanya from the 15th of July till the 14th of August. For further information visit the Tandanya website of give them a call on (08) 8224 3200.
