The gated community of Sanctuary Lakes in Melbourne's outer west doesn't appear to offer a lot to outside visitors. There are oversized houses on tiny blocks of land and an air of 'beige' hangs in the air.
However, situated by the lake and the "Greg Norman designed golf course" is the
Waterstone Cafe. It's a small establishment with a large waterside decking outdoors that serves as an informal place for local residents to bring their children for breakfast or grab a coffee or snack when there's no food in the fridge.
While one may expect the standard eggs any way for breakfast and foccaccia for lunch (and these are available if you choose to blend in with the beige surroundings) the food served up at Waterstone is one step better. Here, eggs on toast are transformed into salsa eggs (poached eggs served with a delicious avocado salsa and balsamic glaze); the BLT includes thick sour dough toast and tasty aioli and the coffee becomes a cinnamon-maple latte that will be the envy of all who stuck with what they know (the skinny latte with one).
So if you find yourself in Sanctuary Lakes and can't find a way out because all the streets look the same, follow the 4WDs and Audis towards the golf course and have some food before you try to find your way home.
