Where Can You Watch Free Outdoor Summer Movies in NYC?

While in New York City, you'll discover many interesting activities and venues that you and your family will enjoy over the summer season. Since there are many options that are free to the public, your visit to the five boroughs doesn't have to be too costly.

For those who want to catch a flick or two at a number of outdoor film festivals, check out the following events where movies play on specific days, starting at sunset.

HBO 20th Anniversary Bryant Park Summer Film Festival 2012

From June 18 to August 20, 2012, enjoy watching all-time favorites, such as "Roman Holiday" on July 16, "The Maltese Falcon" on July 23, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on August 20, and other films that you may have missed during their original duration in theaters, or perhaps those you'd love to see again.

Take the family to the movies at Bryant Park on Mondays at sunset. Bring your picnic blanket and claim a spot on the vast lawn, which opens at 5 p.m. Or, if you can get there by 4 p.m., snag one of the metal chairs lining the gravel pathway along the lawn.

Syfy Movies with a View at Pier 1 - Brooklyn Bridge Park

With the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge as the splendid backdrop for your movie-viewing pleasure, bring the kids or your group of friends to the Harbor View Lawn at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1. Spread some picnic fare and enjoy the film of the night, as well as the waterfront scene.

On Thursdays, from July 5 to August 30, 2012, enjoy movies including "To Kill a Mockingbird" on July 12, "The Big Chill" on August 16 and "Unforgiven" on August 23. Stay tuned—find out what the public votes as the last movie of the season, slated to hit the screen on August 30.

River to River Festival – Movie Nights on the Elevated Acre

Before you head out for a movie on the Elevated Acre at 55 Water Street, between Broad and William streets, don't forget to bring your tickets, which are required. Each person can get up to two tickets at 6 p.m. on the day of each free screening.

Start your week right by hopping on the escalator or climbing up the steps to this precious acreage in a very scenic part of the Financial District in Lower Manhattan. Watch a movie amidst a well-manicured lawn and vibrant seasonal plantings every Monday from June 18 to July 9, starting at 8 p.m.

You have countless options where you can watch free movies—all within a walk, subway, water taxi or car drive away. Before you head out to your preferred location, just keep in mind that each one has its own rules, such as no chairs, tables, tarps, bags or plastic sheets allowed on their lawn. Some places are strictly canine-free zones.

Check the individual websites for details so you'll be able to enjoy the cost-free flicks without any hassles.

These examples are just a few of the outdoor venues you can catch free movies. Where are your favorite spots to catch complimentary summer flicks throughout New York City?
