Dating back to the 18th century, historic cobble stoned Washington Mews is now a private gated street between 5th Avenue and University Place near Washington Square Park. Beautifully preserved, the mews (row of stables) is a step back in time to when it was a resting place for the city's horses. Since the 1950s the former stables have served as housing, offices and other facilities for New York University.
