Washaway Beach
This article is from Sydney WeekendNotes for Friday the 16th of January 2009
Washaway beach is a little hideaway just off the Spit to Manly walking track on the eastern side of Grotto Point.
It can only be reached by walking at least some of the track, and so is consequently less known and less frequented by the seething hordes.
You can see it here in the centre of this satellite photo.
Here are a few pictures:

To get there you can walk the track from the Spit Bridge or Manly and make Washaway your halfway lunch and swim break.
Alternatively you can park on Culter Road, seen in the centre of this map, or catch a bus to nearby Alma St and walk from there, although it's still about 1km away. As always see the 131500 website for your best public transport options.
Once you are on the track head out to Grotto Point, and you will pass the track down to Washaway. Then enjoy your (hopefully) solitary swim.
Washaway was once a nudist beach and some people tell me that you can still from time to time see an untanned buttock, however I've never been so unlucky. Chances are the only naked thing you'll see are the seagulls, and really they've got feathers.
Why? With a little luck a beach to yourself in the middle of Sydney.
