Walk Safely to School Day, now in its 18th year, is an annual national event which aims to encourage primary school children to lead healthier, more active lifestyles through taking a walk at the beginning, middle and end of each day. Promoting the message of Active Kids are Healthy Kids the event aims to reduce car-dependency and increase use of public transport along with cleaner air, improved diets and road safety.
This year's event is to be held on Friday 19 May 2017 and schools around Australia will be holding events to support this initiative. Check with your local school to see what events they are holding however you can also get involved by parking a little further away from school if you need to use your car to get there and walking the rest of the way. Take the opportunity to admire the beautiful colours of autumn, and learn a little about the neighbourhood as you wander.
Further information can be found at the Walk website , including information on how to participate.
