When friends from interstate visit and enquire from me about Western Australia's best local secrets, I often respond by encouraging them to take a road-trip and explore the Wheatbelt region – our state's agricultural heartland. Extending as far north as Geraldton to the south of the state, and eastwards towards small towns with magical names like Mukinbudin and Westonia, the region encompasses not only spectacular fields of the golden grain, but also picturesque nature reserves, rugged granite outcrops and quaint rural towns. These small townships embody classic Australian country hospitality and a relaxed, down-to-earth way of life that has all but disappeared in our cities today. For those who have an interest in getting off the beaten track – or simply want to experience a classic country festival - a great time to visit the Wheatbelt is during one of the region's local agricultural shows.

Coming up on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th of March, Wagin Woolarama is one of the largest country shows held in regional Western Australia, with plenty to see and do for the whole family. Situated approximately 225 kilometres south-east of Perth on the Albany Highway, Wagin is a busy regional centre located in the south Wheatbelt region with wheat-growing and sheep-raising being its most important industries. It's therefore the ideal place to head to for country show connoisseurs.

Whether you're into fairy-floss, farmyard animals or fast and furious fairground rides, Wagin Woolarama ticks all the right boxes for a jam-packed weekend escape the whole family will enjoy. Traditionalists will be sure to relish the Woolarama's similarities to the old-time country shows many of us recall from our childhoods. Classic country events will include show-jumping, cattle judging, sheep-shearing and dog high-jumping, while down at the pavilions, there will be the ever-popular exhibitions of art, photography and traditional crafts such as crochet, knitting, spinning, weaving, quilting, woodwork and much more. For many die-hard foodies, the highlight of any agricultural show is invariably the exhibition of prizewinning cookery, and Wagin Woolarama never disappoints on this count with mouth-watering displays of delicacies such as home-made preserves, sauces, cakes, pies, slices and other goodies whipped up by expert local home chefs.

Country shows are invariably wholesome family-friendly events, and Wagin Woolarama has plenty to enthral and entertain youngsters of all ages. City kids will enjoy the opportunity to see real-live farm animals up close, and many will be fascinated by events such as the sheep-dog trials or the demonstrations of sheep-shearing – something we don't get to see too much of in suburban Perth. As a child I used to love wandering around the animal pavilions at the shows held in my local area – something your kids might find interesting, too. For littlies who want to pat and cuddle some baby animals, there will also be an animal nursery on-site. There will also be plenty of fun down at sideshow alley, with showground rides for youngsters of all ages as well as other frivolous diversions such as laughing clowns and Water Balls. If that wasn't enough, Wagin Woolarama is providing a jam-packed program of delightful family entertainment that includes Bubbles of Joy, Colonial Clydesdales, camel train rides, Flying Magus, Incredible Creatures, the Raptor Discovery Centre and Pirateman, as well as Laserscape Lasertag, for older kids – and the young-at-heart.

Another popular feature of the Wagin Woolarama is its large trade show, where commercial exhibitors converge from around the state to display a huge array of diverse wares. As the Woolarama's website comments, anything from 'tractors to teddy bears, silos to silk scarves, caravans to candles, houses to hats' – and much more – can be found here. Therefore, whether you're a local farmer or a visiting city-slicker, you're certain to find something that will be of interest.

A few other ever-popular attractions that will be returning to this year's Wagin Woolarama will be the Historical Village Museum, several daily fashion shows and a Rodeo Spectacular. Musical entertainment that will playing over the two days of this year's festival will be Chris Edmondson, Stolen Seeds and Lost Tails.

In conclusion, if you're yearning to escape the city for the weekend and are searching for the ideal destination, perhaps consider a road-trip to Wagin for its annual Woolarama. A classic Western Australian agricultural show, Wagin Woolarama has developed a well-earned reputation not only for the immense variety of family-friendly activities it has on offer, but also for its warm-hearted country hospitality. There's something for everyone – from the littlest toddlers to oldest seniors.

This year's Wagin Woolarama will be taking place on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th of March, at Wagin Showgrounds - located on Ballagin Street. To find out more, visit the Wagin Woolarama website .
