David Archer is an artist in Adelaide who devotes much of his spare time to making automata - gadgets that combine art and mechanics to animate them and inspire wonder and humour. He's the man behind the creations for the fabulous Steampunk Festival at the National Railway Museum, Uncomfortably Numb at SASA Gallery, and Archers Arcadia Exhibition held at the State Library.

David's creations range from the very simple to a more complex beast like Pearls Before Swine - a water powered mechanical pig with some very interesting eating habits. Some of his inventions are electric powered and coin operated, while others are very simple hand cranked things with few moving parts.

Children love the interactivity of these fun toys, and the is designed to allow kids to enjoy making a simple creation which they can take home afterwards. Everyone attending the workshop in Adelaide chooses different parts, and can use their own imagination to decide which decorative materials to use as a finish. After selecting the basic parts, they design and build their own critterbug, then decorate it with coloured wire, beads, jewels, and other bright objects until their creation looks just right. This means that nobody will take home the same thing, all the critterbugs produced at each workshop are quite unique.

The workshops don't use any power tools or other risky equipment, so are suitable for children aged around 8 up to age 14. Each workshop runs from 10am to 3pm with a maximum of 12 kids, and during this time the kids are helped to make a creature which they can be proud of, on its own base with simple flapping wings that actually move.

It is a great chance for children to have fun and be creative during the school holidays. These workshops are only held infrequently, and the price, location and booking details change from time to time. For the latest details of these workshops, please see the Archer's Arcadia Facebook page where you'll find colourful examples of David Archer's latest curiosities.

I imagine that there will be lots of interest, so book early if you plan to take your child - bookings are essential.
