The first Monday of June commemorates the arrival of European settlers in the Swan River Colony. Formerly known as Foundation Day,
Western Australia Day is inclusive of all Western Australians and a time to celebrate the state's achievements and cultural diversity. On 1 June Perth and regional residents are invited to
Come Out & Play at a huge range of free events. Activities include tours, crafts, music and dance, films and more, making it easy for people of all ages to "just relax".
Most Perth events take place in and around the Cultural Centre with the Art Gallery, Museum, State Library and Theatre Centre all participating. Read on and start planning your day to celebrate WA.
[SECTION]Perth Cultural Centre[/SECTION]
Around the Cultural Centre
The
Cultural Centre Precinct will be packed with entertainment. Learn circus skills, try puppet making or street arts and munch some
street food . Head to the
Urban Orchard for a paper plane flight workshop and join in a throwing contest then watch the hit WA Movie Paper Planes.
Other outdoor events include the Imagination Playground, mask-making and face painting,
Art Gallery of Western Australia
The
Art Gallery is offering a guided tour of WA artists as well as a chance to contribute to the Community Canvas, a work intended to increase understanding of Aboriginal culture and identity. There will also be performances by the Ochre Contemporary Dance Company and children's dance workshops (bookings required).
State Theatre Centre of WA
Visitors to the
State Theatre are in for a treat with backstage tours for the grownups while youngsters can drive pedal cars and meet the
Gruffalo .
In the afternoon there are two showings of the world premiere documentary film Walking Together – Belonging to Country (Djena Koorliny Danjoo Boodjar-ang). Produced by the
Kurongkurl Katitjin centre at Edith Cowan University, the film explores the Aboriginal six seasons and the relationship between traditional Aboriginal knowledge and Western natural and social scientific knowledge and ways to move forward together.
State Library
The
State Library is the go-to place for unusual history. See Bounce Down, a history of 100 years of woman's Aussie Rules football and then play handball with some of today's stars. Check out the Weird and Wonderful WA exhibit and write a descriptive caption, then pop outside for some modern wacky fun at the Silent Disco.
WA Museum
Adults can visit the
WA Museum Beach Bar to eat fish and chips while enjoying the Matsos Raw Live and Unplugged competition while families work together to create Stories in the Sand.
Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts
Visit
PICA to see Hatched, the annual show of emerging art, then contribute your own piece at the Spark_Lab Education Studio.
[SECTION]Regional Events[/SECTION]
The Pilbara will be celebrating the
Red Dog Festival featuring the Red Dog Relay where teams of 4 - 6 people to run, drive, cycle, walk, swim and paddle around the Pilbara.
The Margaret River region will be grooving to the sounds of
Jazz by the Bay (free and ticketed performances).
The
WA Museum will be hosting events at Albany, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie-Boulder as will the
Courthouse Gallery in Port Hedland.
There will also be many local events so check with the council in your area and enjoy the day.
