It's a novel idea, and it's catching on - paying for clothes by weight. £15 a kilo, to be precise.
The
Vintage Kilo Sale makes its way around the country, London included, selling garments from days gone by (mainly 60s, 70s and 80s). All you have to do is pick out what you like, weigh it all when you're done, and hand over the readies.
Each Vintage Kilo Sale event brings along about 2.5 tonnes of
decent, stylish, quality garments for your perusal.
The organisers point out how most high street stores these days are brimming with mass produced costumes and coverings whose designs, ironically, draw much of their inspiration from yesteryear.
And you know how embarrassing it can be sitting opposite someone on the tube who's wearing the same top you recently bought in the sales in a well-known store on Oxford Street. There's little chance of that happening if you buy something at a Vintage Kilo Sale event.
Buy some clothes at one of these popular events and you'll be doing your bit for the environment too, helping the recycling process while giving some old but superbly snazzy clothes a new lease of life - without damaging your wallet (unless you break the scales).
If you're wondering what on earth a kilo of clothes looks like, the organisers give this example: "Four summer dresses, or a pair of trousers, T-shirt and jumper." Not bad for fifteen quid, eh?
Of course, if paying by weight really goes against your clothes-buying ethos, you can also pay by the garment (most items go for between £5 and £8), but you'll most likely find it's far better value for money to get your stuff on the scales.
See the
event's website to find out the date of the next Vintage Kilo Sale event and say goodbye to the days of fiddling about looking for a price label on a garment only to discover you'll need to sell the car to be able to afford it.
