Vinegar: not the best smelling substance, but one of the most useful. Here are a few ways to use vinegar around the house!

Laundry: Before laundering clothes, spray them with a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar, particularly on areas that have stains. The acid in the vinegar will dissolve stains, without harming delicate fabrics. For white garments that have yellowed, use a mixture of 12 parts warm water and 1 part white vinegar. Soak garments overnight and then launder the following day. Garments should become much whiter and brighter as a result of the vinegar, without the usual cost associated with expensive dry-cleaners. For all those athletes out there, before machine washing any sports shoes, soak them for a few minutes in a bucket with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. This will kill any bacteria, as well deodorizing your shoes.

Cleaning: Next time you need to clean a metal surface, instead of spending money on expensive products for copper or steel, why not try making this all-purpose metal cleaner at home? Mix one tablespoon of flour (both self-raising or plain will work), one tablespoon of cooking salt, and a small amount of white vinegar to make a paste. Use the paste on metal surfaces that need to be cleaned, and then rinse with warm water. The acetic acid contained in the vinegar can cut through grease and grime, as well as serving as an effective anti-bacteria paste for bacteria and germs.

Home Improvement: Before stripping off old wallpaper, spray the wallpaper with a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar until it is well saturated, and then strip away. To restore paintbrushes that have dried-on paint on them, soak them in undiluted white vinegar until the paint dissolves.

Garden:To increase soil acidity in your garden, add 1 cup white vinegar to a large bucket of tap water, and water the desired area once a week for three weeks. The acetic acid in the vinegar will release the iron in the soil for healthy plants. To keep flowers in your home fresher for longer, place 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons white vinegar for every 4½ cups water in the vase. Trim the flower stems and change the vinegar solution every four to five days. To get rid of weeds, simply spray the stalk and the base of the plant with undiluted white vinegar. The same treatment can be used on unwanted grass on driveways and paths.

Animal Care: A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar added to your dog's drinking water will help keep their insides in top condition, and make it harder for bacteria such as E-coli to form. To rid your pet of ticks or fleas, fill a spray-bottle with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water, and apply directly to your pet's fur.

These are just a few examples of ways in which vinegar can be used. Do yourself a favour and buy a bottle.
