Travel in Thailand can be a little challenging if you want to head off the beaten path. Few people speak English away from main tourist centres and destinations, but these can be some of the most rewarding places to experience. A well worn guide book used to be the key, but now with almost total access to the internet, apps have replaced this. With this in mind, here are a few apps that I use regularly.

The Thai Street Food App is simply superb. It allows you to broaden your horizons and try new dishes when travelling the streets of the city. It's loaded with pictures of all sorts of foods available on the street, from snacks and desserts to main dishes and drinks. Each category has dozens of different choices. It also has written Thai with an audio track of each dish so you can practice your pronunciation. If all else fails, you can show them a picture.

Using Taxis in Bangkok can be a hit and miss affair and can be incredibly infuriating. It's bad enough for locals and expats, so if you're just visiting, you might just pull your hair out. Grab Taxi is my go to app for transport. You can choose your destination as the pickup or book a pickup for a later time. I often use it for long trips so that I know I won't be subject to variable taxi fares. From my experience, the taxi drivers who use the app are more genial and professional.

Language barriers can cause a lot of frustration when travelling, so a good and practical language app can take away the stress. Although I speak the language, I still use an app to check my pronunciation and expand my vocabulary. The best I've found is Simply Learn Thai, which has massive range of vocabulary and phrases with audio, phonetic spelling and Thai spelling. If you do get serious about learning the language, it has expansion packs you can pay for to continue your lessons.

If you're anything like me, when travelling you're always converting in your head to make sure your getting as good a price as you can. I know this can be a bad habit, but until you're aware of local pricing and what value goods and services should be, it's a good idea to use a currency exchange app. I use xe.com's app, which is easy to use and modify to your preferred currencies.

There are dozens of hotel booking apps and it's difficult to choose between them, however I always end up using bookings.com's app for one simple reason. You can make a booking without handing over credit card details and you can cancel it at any time. This is not true for 100% of the hotels on the app, however it does seem to be the case for a lot of them.
