The reason I don't play sport regularly is because I find competitive sport intimidating, serious and not much fun. I love the idea of playing but as I have about as much hand-eye coordination as a relaxed sloth, I've never been able to find a sport or team that is more about fun than winning - that is until now.

Urban Rec Australia is a young company that promotes being active, social and fun. They have a league for the most epic sport around- Dodgeball. Just picture pumping tunes, laughter and making new mates, all while getting fit.

So what is Dodgeball? Two teams try to hit their opponents with (soft) balls whilst trying not to get hit themselves. It's challenging, hilarious and because it's so much fun, you don't even realise that you've had such a great workout as well.

If you don't know how to play Dodgeball that's okay, they hold Learn and Play sessions before the competition starts so that everyone can get their dodging skills up to scratch before they play. Don't worry about the balls, they're soft and don't hurt if you get hit

The best part is the social aspect of the game. You even get team points for going out and having drinks at the Clubhouse after the game. I'm sure I could take my team to victory with all the socialising points. There are great prizes to be won like pub vouchers and even t-shirts and medals for the winning team. If you're hopeless on the sporting front like myself you can aim to win "Funnest" Team, which is more of an achievement in my books.

Urban Rec will be holding big Dodgeball tournaments in Summer with BBQs, loud music and drinking in the sunshine. It'll be the best way to have fun and burn calories at the same time.

If you have 5 or 6 friends that would like to play, you can sign up as a team or you can sign up as an individual and meet new people. You'd be surprised by how much fun you can have with groups if people you've just met.

The Urban Rec Dodgball league is currently held in Alexandria. Season registration is $110 per person or $10 per drop in game. If Dodgeball isn't your cup of tea, they also run other sports such as touch football, mixed netball, mixed soccer and beach volleyball, all starting soon.
