It's a little known fact that the art gallery at the University of Queensland is one of the largest in the state.
The University of Queensland Art Museum (
University Drive, UQ St Lucia) provides exhibitions of local works and art education, with no admission price.
The gallery is located in the James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre on the University of Queensland's St Lucia campus and presents a range of exhibitions, programs, workshops and talks to members of the public. Their aim is to preserve and present Australian art, especially Queensland art. Past exhibits include
Sidney Nolan's Gallipoli Series and earthenware dating back to 3000BCE.
This venue also has a focus on education and provides activities, programs and resources to compliment the items in the gallery. A full list of public programs and educations can be found
here, while the website provides free downloadable guides and information for visitors and high school students.
For art themed merchandise and publications, check out the UQ Art Museum Bookshop before you leave.
The University of Queensland began collecting art in the 1940's. Seventy years later, the UQ Art Museum has the second largest art collection in Queensland. The Museum is one of eight members of the University Art Museums Australia.
The UQ Art Museum is open daily from 10.00am until 4.00pm, excluding public holidays. Admission is free.
