The University of Queensland (UQ) Alumni Book Fair and Rare Book Auction is on again from April 24 - 29, 2015. If you are a book lover this is a great chance to buy some wonderful books on a variety of topics. If you are like me you enjoy browsing almost as much as buying and you will spend hours at the fair searching for books and imagining their previous lives in someone's library.

The UQ Alumni holds regular book fairs to bring the community to the university and to raise money for various university projects such as bursaries, scholarships, prizes, equipment and artefacts for Departments and Museums throughout the University.

The first event is the Rare Book Auction to be held on Friday 24th April at 6pm at the the Playhouse Women's College, Sir William MacGregor Drive, St Lucia. A treasure trove of rare, exotic and beautiful publications will be auctioned by an official auctioneer. Make sure you turn up early to peruse the books on offer.

The Book Fair opens on Saturday 25th April and runs through until Wednesday 29th April. It will be held at the UQ Centre which can be found here . There will be two sessions exclusively for people with disabilities and their carers on Sunday 26th from 8.30-9am and 5pm - 6pm.

There will be over 200,000 books, DVDs, LPs, magazines and videos for sale. Books are carefully sorted into categories by an army of volunteers. There is definitely something for everyone. Categories include recipes to advanced chemistry, to classics to ancient history to fiction, non-fiction to economics, engineering, war, religion, medicine, DIY, opera and children's classics and everything in between.

If you'd like to volunteer at the book fair there are a number of different types of roles over various days. On Thursday 23rd to Friday 24th April the fair requires people to help set up the book fair. Throughout the sale volunteers are required for all sorts of tasks from door attendants, cashiers, restocking and so on. There are also tasks that can be done while seated so not all volunteers are required to rove around or lift heavy boxes. There is a volunteer form on the website for potential volunteers to complete and to request particular days and tasks. Many, but not all, volunteers are UQ graduates, some are retired academics, teachers and professionals, some are graduates of other universities.

The also welcomes donations of books. These can be brought to the Alumni Centre, university building 91C, on Walcott Street on the perimeter of the St Lucia campus. Books can be left near the shed at any time.
