I know all the major shops put out a catalogue of gift ideas for Mother's Day but I like the idea of buying something more personal and individual than the latest slippers, dressing gowns and soaps, nice as these can be.

So clearly it depends on what your mum likes but these shops offer a variety of items so hopefully you'll find something just right.

1 and 2. If your Mum is into Art the gift shops at Queensland Art Gallery and GOMA have a great range of art and design books as well as quirky jewellery and homewares.

You can find luxury items that are more expensive right through to the more affordable, for opening hours and more details see here .

3. Handmade Highstreet at Annerley has, as its name suggests, lots of locally handmade items from jewellery to clothing to homewares at a great range of prices. Support local artists and find one of a kind gifts.

See West End Girl's review here .

4. Incube8r in Brunswick St in the Valley supports up and coming artists and craftworkers.

There is quite a range of styles of items on offer from jewellery to bags, to felted items to paintings to homewares. You will certainly find something unique and also get a good feeling by knowing that you have helped a new artist find their feet. For more information see here .

5. Another great option in the Valley is Artisan which supports all kinds of creative types with a gallery and shop. The shop has a beautiful range of handcrafted jewellery that is quite original (think necklaces of silver crafted to look like a pencil shaving by Victoria Mason) to clothing to pottery, upcycled bags and much more.

For more details check out their website .

6. Or if your Mum is more interested in puzzles and games head to Presents of Mind at Paddington. This is one of my favourite shops and I never fail to find a present here. The staff are very helpful and rather good at finding a gift to match your description of the person. I shop here for birthdays of any age, Christmas and so on.

The shop has a great range of unusual games (think Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Dr Who, Archaeology), fiendishly challenging double sided and Wasgij Jigsaw puzzles, books, craft and science project gifts as well as quirky mobile phone holders, clocks and more.

For gift ideas see here .
