As part of the Winter Arts Festival, the University of Western Australia is offering a series of exciting workshops for children over the July school holidays. Places are limited, so book your places early. Parents and caregivers are welcome to either leave their children for the duration, or stay for the workshop.



Behind the Curtain: Children's Theatre Workshop
Presented by University Dramatic Society, this workshop is for children aged 8 to 12 and will take kids behind the curtains and show them what happens behind the scenes in the world of theatre. For kids who love drama and want to try out a range of acting and performance skills such as improv, voice and movement, no experience is required.

When: Monday 3rd, Tuesday 4th, Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th July from 10am to 11am

Discover Percussion
Presented by UWA School of Music and led by one of Perth's top percussionists Jackson Vickery, Discover! Percussion is for children aged 8-12 who want to learn more about the wonderful world of percussion. Kids will discover a range of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments as well as new and exciting beats and rhythms. This hands-on session is suitable for complete beginners, as well as those with some prior musical experience.

Nature Under The Microscope
This workshop is for children aged between 8 and 12 who are fascinated by small things. Kids will be able to collect material from the University gardens and then view them under the microscope. Everyone will take home an amethyst crystal provided for examination.

When: Tuesday 4th and 11th July from 10am to 11am

From Gems to Jewellery
Have you ever wondered how crystals are formed? Children (8 to 12) will learn about how mineral crystals are formed as well as handle large crystals and examine them under a microscope. Then they will be able to select their own gems to make an item of jewellery to take home.

When: Thursday 6th July and Friday 14th July from 10am – 11am

**Junior Paleontologists
**This workshop is for kids aspiring to be junior palaeontologists and who want to learn about fossils. Not only will they be able to touch and observe real life fossil material but they will be able to unearth a fossil to take home. For children 8 to 12 years.

Fibre Art Animals
Children aged 10 to 14 are invited to join Nyoongar artist Sharyn Egan and create an art sculpture animal from straw and colourful natural bres. Sharyn is an acclaimed local artist who will help children make their very own unique creation during this fun and relaxed workshop.

Needle-felted Pet Portraits Workshop
This is a fun workshop with artist Elizabeth Marruffo for kids aged 7 to 12, and 13 to 17 to make their very own mini felt sculpture. Bring along a picture of your favourite pet and using 100% Australian Merino wool you will learn how to sculpt a beautiful little portrait of your pet (and even accessories and food).

When: For ages 7 - 12: Thursday 6th July 11am - 1pm
For ages 13 - 17: Thursday 6th July 2:30 - 4:40pm

Clay Cuties and Mini Beasts
Proving good things come in small packages, artist Elizabeth Marru o will teach children (aged 6 years and older) how to sculpt tiny creatures from colourful polymer clay. Using clever sculpting tools and techniques, kids will learn the basic skills to make anything from dragons to unicorns and every (tiny)thing in between.

When: Friday 7th July from 2:30 to 4:30pm

Paint Yourself
For older kids aged 13 to 17 years, this workshop will teach you how to use modern make-up to create your own self-portraits. Bring along a printed A4 'selfie' photograph and using make-up as a paint palette, you will learn how to paint a portrait with tips and tricks from professional artist Elizabeth Marruffo.

When: Friday 8th July from 1 to 3pm

Discover! Ukulele
Presented by UWA School of Music and with talented musician Daniel Burton, kids 8 to 12 will have a fun-filled introduction to playing the ukulele, the worlds' most popular instrument. This introductory workshop will show you how easy it is to start playing this amazing little instrument. Instruments provided or bring your own ukulele if you have one.

When: Ages 8 - 10 years, Tuesday 11th July from 2 - 3:30pm
Ages 10 - 12 years, Tues 11th July from 3:30 - 5pm

Somerville Forest KIN Village
This very special event is for children aged 7 to 12 where kids will have the chance to play and explore under the pines. Guided by the team at Educated by Nature, children can build a village of cubbies, get involved with nature-inspired art, learn how to whittle, play games and make music, all celebrating the natural environment. This is a drop and leave program, don't forget their lunch.

When: Thursday 13 July, 10am-3pm
