Calling all one-wheelers.
The
Unicycle Festival will be taking over the city from Sept. 3-5, with mass rides, workshops and games scheduled throughout the city.
Bicycle ridership in the city
has increased over the past year, and what better time than to celebrate the more quirky unicycle than now (there's even a
local club!).
The
main affair takes place on Sept. 4, with a day of races, shows and games at
Governor's Island.
There, unicycle novices can get an introduction to the one-wheeler through demonstrations, while those with a bit more experience under their belts can participate in races, organized games such as unicycle basketball and unicycle hockey, and advanced workshops.
Enthusiasts or curious onlookers can also take in a unicycle film series, a show featuring the best unicycle entertainers from around the world, and daredevils performing one-wheeled tricks, a la BMX-style antics but on one wheel, of course. If you find yourself desiring a unicycle of your own, vendors will also be on hand.
Other festivities during the three-day festival include a
long distance unicycle ride in Brooklyn on Sept. 3 - for those who really can keep their balance - and
riding at Grant's Tomb on Sept. 5. So don't miss out on the unicycle madness before it rides away.
