As part of the
Eat Drink Perth Festival, the first Twilight Hawker Market was held last night, 28th October, in the City.
It was the beginning of a nice summer night when, right in the middle of Perth city, in Forrest place, the small market of about ten stalls created an amazing atmosphere. The market serves home-style street food from all around the world.
Some of the different stalls include:
Satay – when you arrive in the market, the first thing you smell is that of chicken satay cooking on a fire. I had a couple of those when I got there, I couldn't resist. They were delicious.
The spiral spuds – these deep fried potatoes, cut in a spiral way and placed in a stick, were very popular and quite interesting. I had never thought of eating a potato this way. They were good but quite expensive for what it is, they were $4 each. In addition to the street vendors, visitors can enjoy free live music and other amazing entertainments around the market street.
Hot Donuts – This stall was my favourite with their delicious home made donuts. But not like the usual donuts with a hole in the middle, just donut balls. And quite cheap too, 5 donuts for $8. You have the choice of plain donuts or with jam in the middle. I suggest with the jam, simply amazing.
2 Fat Indians – I had a taste of some food from this stall, it was really good, but I was more interested in the other food you don't usually find around Perth. But they serve good Indian cuisine, with a choice of lamb curry, fish curry and chicken with rice.
The Paella Stall – this one drew quite a crowd, with its huge paella pans full of rive, chicken and seafood. It was $10 for a plate, which is not expensive, but the portion was quite small. Still, one of the best paellas I've eaten so far.
The Hungry Crepe – a little French touch, with the famous crepes. I didn't have anything from here but judging by the queue it must have been good.
The organic stall – looking for anything organic no need to wonder off to all the other stalls. A wide range of organic food from organic vegan burger to organic herbs and spices.
The German Bratwurst – if you like a good hotdog, you will like this stall, especially with the choice of sausages. They have kangaroo sausages, crocodile sausages and the traditional German pork/beef sausages.
The Mexican Burrito Bar – This was a vibrant stall, full of colours. Serving beef, chicken or vegetarian tortillas and nachos, for $10. A lot of people were leaving that stall with a big full tortilla, which looked very good. Might try that next Friday.
I just love this kind of atmosphere. And, in addition to the market stalls, people can enjoy live music and other entertainments around.
So if I were you, I would take advantage of the nice summer nights of Perth to enjoy an evening out with friends or partner. You will definitely find something there you like.
The market is open from 5pm to 8pm every Friday evening until March 2012.
