In 2011,
Taronga Zoo will host the
Sun-Herald Twilight at Taronga concert series.
From January, the sights of Sydney's most scenic zoo will combine with a
diverse range of musical talent - all under the cover of twilight and within the hearing of all the zoo's inhabitants.
The concert series will commence in the classical genre. On Saturday 22 January at 7pm,
Yvonne Kenny will perform her favourite stage and operatic numbers accompanied by tenor James Egglestone.
Of course, the main genre of music will appeal to those with a passion for classic rock. On 29 January, the
Beatnix will evoke the classic sounds of the Beatles for their Beatlemania concert and on 5 March, a tribute band will be performing the most popular Stones songs.
Apart from the tributes to bygone music stars, the Twilight at Taronga series will focus on particular eras. On 18 and 19 February, 80s Night will bring a bit of disco to the animal kingdom and on 18 and 19 March, concert-goers will be asked to "Celebrate the Sixties."
In order to book a spot for these twilight concerts, it is necessary to make a reservation through
Ticketek. Tickets tend to be clustered in the $60 to $70 range, with an additional charge for zoo entry.
It is this possibility to compound a night of musical excitement with a nocturnal viewing of animals who call Taronga home that makes the Twilight at Taronga series inviting not only to music fans, but also to families and animal-lovers. Visitors are invited to bring their picnic baskets along, and the concerts will be held regardless of the weather - so it might be necessary to bring a brolly!
