Like much of the population of Melbourne, I love cafes. One major reason I love cafes so much is because I work as a freelance writer. I've spent the past three years traveling and living in different places around Europe, and therefore I know what I am saying when I boldly state that Melbourne has the best cafe culture.

Admittedly, I am one of those Aussies abroad who will boast about Melbourne and argue with any Sydney-sider that down south is the best. However, I feel completely justified in my stance.

Upon returning to Melbourne last month, I have resumed my freelance writing work. This means an apt excuse to hop from cafe to cafe, ordering chai lattes along the way and indulging in Melbourne's beautiful culture. And once again confirming that I am correct in supporting (and bragging about) the awesome culture of Melbourne.

A recent gem that I've found along the sensational Chapel Street is a little hideaway called Tusk. It's a rather unassuming place on the corner of Green Street. On the inside, it's a real delight.

Now, there are two important things that a freelance writer immediately looks for in a cafe. First, WiFi. And yes, sometimes I do feel obnoxious asking the wait staff for WiFi as soon as I enter, but hopefully, the laptop bag and weary eyes explain that I'm here to do some work. Therefore, finding a place with entirely non-judgemental wait staff is a huge bonus. Tusk ticks the box here.

The next thing that is all important for a freelance writer is a charging outlet. To be a little bit respectful, I do try to charge my computer the night before so that it's ready to go. But ultimately, I'm going to need to charge it up. So I ask for this as well. Again, staff members who are accommodating make a place fantastic in my books. And again, Tusk ticks this box. The wait staff was more than happy for me to unplug a lamp and use that power point.

The final thing that is of the utmost importance to a freelance writer is the ability to loiter for as long as possible. Once the laptop is out, it's not going away for a few hours. Therefore, it makes me feel very welcome and comfortable when the staff members are happy for me to order chai latte after chai latte without pressuring me at any point. Extra points go to the Tusk waitresses who kept refilling my glass of water throughout my work session here.

One last thing, to extend on those multiple chai lattes I consumed, the coffee is amazing at Tusk. I am a self-confessed chai latte expert, spending the majority of mornings sipping on one whilst typing away at various cafes. Therefore, I know a good chai latte and I know good value.

Here, a large chai latte with a tasty biscuit on the side was a mere $4.80. By Melbourne standards, and Chapel Street standards, this is truly excellent. Although I didn't order any food at Tusk, I always like to take a cheeky glance at the menu, and I must say I was impressed with the prices and options here. When the next writing paycheck clears, brunch at Tusk will be a priority.

Now, writers are inherently observers. Therefore, when I was loitering at a cafe working away, I did notice the other customers and how the wait staff interacts with them. I've got to say, I didn't see one unhappy face come or go at Tusk. That is the sign of a true gem. This one on Chapel Street is absolutely one to check out.
