In 1906, the site on George Street was the Lyceum, Brisbanes first permanent picture theatre. In the sixties, it became popular art house cinema The Dendy. In the twenty-first century, the name may have changed, but not much else has.
The Tribal Theatre (
346 George Street, Brisbane) is still dedicated to showcasing arthouse cinema, as well as cult, Australian and classic movies. It is an owner operated business with two cinemas, both still sporting the elaborate art deco adornments of days past.
Current features include the street art documentary
Exit Through the Gift Shop and indie Australian horror flick
The Loved Ones. The Tribal also runs events and film festivals like the Brazil Festival and the Weird Wednesday Christmas Special (showing those classic Christmas flicks
Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and
Silent Night, Bloody Night.)
And ticket prices are amongst the cheapest in Brisbane; general admission ranges between $6 and $12 and drops to $5 (for all tickets types) on cheap Tuesday. You can also BYO wine or beer for a $5 corkage fee.
If this sounds like your kind of venue, you might like to join the
Tribal Theatre Movie Club where, for $10 per annum, you will receive $6 tickets, a complimentary double pass on your birthday and information on upcoming movies and events.
The Tribal Theatre provides a lavish venue for those who prefer their films a little left of mainstream.
