Riding a horse through the Australian bush is a very relaxing passtime. Images from
The Man from Snowy River and imagery from the
original Banjo Paterson poem are ingrained in our collective DNA, reminiscent of a sepia-toned past before all the beeping and honking got out of hand.
The Blue Mountains is the best place to go for a ride in the bush close to Sydney. In return for traveling for around 2 hours to get there, it feels like you are in the middle of the back-and-beyond without a toot or broooom to be heard.
Most trail ride operators have a stable of trusty old horses who are used to carting around complete novices. They are also quite happy to give you a quick lesson before heading off, so even if you've never ridden before you'll be able to enjoy yourself.
Guided rides usually cost around $40 to $60 for 1 hour, and $80 to $120 for 2 hours.
There are only
a few operators which I know of, or could find:
Werriberri Trail Rides,
Centennial Glen Stables, and
Megalong Australia Heritage Centre. All are quite small operators which is great - you get a more personal experience.
I managed to organise a 50% discount with Werriberri on the 2 and 1 hour trail rides.
Sign up here for the 2 hour, and
here for the 1 hour.
I'd recommend the 2 hour, especially if you're a novice (you'll still have a good ride after the lesson). Werriberri is run by Kathy Tucker and her kids, a lovely lady who's promised to look after all the WeekendNotes readers.
Some more viewing to get you in the mood.
