The Melbourne Cup, the race that stops the nation is only part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Around $10million in prize money is on offer across the four day carnival which attracts fine horses from across the world but in true carnival style this week of high stakes horse racing has even
more to offer .
The Myer Fashions on the Field competition draws almost as much public attention as the races themselves but along with the finery there is also fashion silliness. Who can guess what outrageous costumes we will see this year?
Add in fine dining, friendship, and a flutter on the gee-gees and this entertainment fiesta takes its rightful place as one of Melbourne's premier events.
The races are held at Flemington Racecourse at 448 Epsom Road, Flemington. It is well serviced by public transport if you prefer to leave the car at home. For details about public transport, parking and maps click
here . Check the
website for daily schedules. Most races start mid to late morning with last race around or just after 5pm. Tickets are available from
Ticketek . Prices range from $28 for a concession ticket, $74 for an adult through to $480 for the Hillstand 4 Day Melbourne Cup Carnival Package. On Emirates Stakes Day children under 16 are admitted free and family tickets are available for $110.

It was on the now infamous Derby Day in 1965 when fashion model and actress Jean Shrimpton made headlines around the world for wearing a miniskirt.
The official flower of the day, which will be on sale at you enter the course, is the blue cornflower.
