Top cheap Christmas gift ideas and be a great KK
Image: freedigitalphotos.net - do not be in the red this Christmas as Kris Kringle/Secret Santa

As you may have experienced with Christmas in the past, you might have been someone's KK or Kris Kringle. Or perhaps their Secret Santa. The term 'KK' can either mean Kris Kringle or Secret Santa. If you are not familiar with this form of Christmas gift giving; how it works (especially in workplaces) is that every person's name is put in a hat. Whoever's name you draw out of a hat is the person that you need to buy a cheap gift for. For everyone who participates, the spending amount is usually $10 on each present. You are informed of the spending amount prior to making your decision as to whether or not you wish to participate in this affordable gift giving process.

For many people, their budgets and funds do not spread out to buying a gift for everyone in the workplace or at your office. That way there is no guilt in not being able to buy a present for everyone. Everyone receives something, so therefore with the KK, Kris Kringle and Secret Santa process, no one is left out.

The idea is to spread the Christmas cheer. Many families are adopting this system so their family is not dubbed the family of "the Grinches" who stole Christmas. Especially as many household budgets are now tighter than ever.

But here is the sticky situation, especially for the workplace - what about if you end up being a KK to someone you don't know well - what do you do then? This actually happened to my boyfriend one year when his workplace participated in KK. He received a beer bottle opener, and yet he never drinks alcohol.

This is why I have created this list to help you with top KK gift ideas that will ensure you're one happy KK giver in spreading the Christmas cheer. Remember, on the card, just write "Merry Christmas from your KK." The receiver is not meant to know who their gift was from, hence Secret Santa.

1. Massage Vouchers

Simply purchase a massage voucher to the value of the KK. Again the budget is usually $10. In other situations it can be $15, no more than $20. You just need to buy one at a Chinese massage place right near your workplace. That way the receiver of your KK gift can then choose what type of massage he/she desires. All of us (from time to time) experience some sort of tension somewhere in our bodies, hence a massage is a great way to alleviate it.

2. Chocolate

One year (while I was in the workforce before going freelance) I brought my KK a box of Lindt chocolates, and I was right on budget. He shared them around for us all to enjoy. Funnily enough, my KK brought me the exact same box of chocolates that same year. It was an awesome gift all round. Chocolate is what Christmas is all about. Hands up who doesn't love Chocolate? That's right I can sense that not many hands are being raised right now.

3. Boost Juice Vouchers

They're virtually everywhere. Who doesn't love a Boost Juice? Buy your KK a Boost Juice voucher to the value of your KK allocated spend. If they don't like their healthy smoothies, they can always purchase a couple of the naughtier ones with chocolate in them. Or there are other snacks they can buy. With a KK budget of $15, at least a couple of original sized smoothies are enjoyed.

4. Scratchies

Although gambling shouldn't be encouraged, even for those of us who do not bet on any horses for the Melbourne Cup, we still love a little scratchie once in a while. Your receiver of such a gift could walk away with way more than the KK originally spent.

5. Movie Tickets

All of us love to see a great flick. That way the receiver of your KK gift can also choose the movie session of their choice. If the ticket is only $2 beyond your budget, your receiver will love you for it, and it isn't too much to ask.

6. Coffee mug

More suitable for an office KK experience. A plain one is suitable if you do not know the tastes of the person you have become a KK for. Fill it up with jelly beans or chocolate. Especially for the office, and anyone who has worked (or is working) in an office has always snacked on something sweet for energy during their workday.

7. Stationery

A few colourful pens from Smiggle will give you (as the KK, your money's worth) and will put a sweet smile on your receiver's face. We all need such stationery to write things down from time to time.

8. Crossword/Sudoku Book

A great office KK gift idea. Perfect for those who commute longer distances to get to work. A great companion on train rides to and from work in particular.

Some of the top KK gift ideas that are suitable for any receiver, regardless of likes and interests have been mentioned. No more second guessing. Enjoy being Secret Santa this Christmas. If you have any other top KK gift ideas, please share for everyone's benefit by leaving a comment.
