Highlights of What's On in Adelaide in December

Christmas Events
You've survived the Christmas Pageant without losing your kids, and Carols by Candlelight passed harmoniously, but there are still a few more Christmas events in Adelaide to get through before you sit down for tucker with the turkey.

Playford Community Carols on Saturday December 3 kicks off with an afternoon of live entertainment and free things to do at Elizabeth. The family fun day ends with a fantastic free fireworks spectacular.

South of Adelaide, in Mitcham join in Carols by the Creek at the Soldiers Memorial Gardens in Hawthorn on Sunday December 4, with free entertainment from 5pm-9pm. There's no mention of fireworks, but you may spot a few tradies welding at the Aldi construction site across the road.

Families who thrill to a Silent Night can also catch the Carols in the Park at Glandore Community Centre on Wednesday December 7 from 5.30. Free things to do include fun for kids on the bouncy castles, a visit from Santa, face painting and craft activities, and a variety of Christmas Market stalls.

Have a more peaceful time in Adelaide at the Town Hall, where Illuminart's free spectacular projection light display looks awesome. If you enjoy that then don't miss their colourful Story Wall at the State Library - another of the free things to do in Adelaide

Christmas Markets
While most families are madly getting organised for Christmas in December, there aren't as many fun things to do in Adelaide this month - unless you are addicted to markets. Christmas is the time for giving, and there are enough Christmas markets coming up to satisfy any market junkie's need to buy gifts. If the recent French Christmas Markets are any guide, all of the Christmas markets listed below will be packed.

Semaphore Summer Twilight Markets are one of my favourites, kicking off from Friday December 2 next to the Semaphore Amusement Park . At the other side of town try the Moonlight Markets at Paradise.

Pick up some Christmas gifts (or fresh organic food and wine) at Urrbrae Barn Market on Saturday, with Wattle Street Market just down the road. Also the same weekend is the Christmas Market of handmade crafts from the Embroiderers Guild of SA.

The following Friday stay cool at the Beachfront Twilight Markets or Semaphore Summer Twilight Markets . Don't forget to save some cash for the new Prospect Eco Market on Saturday, and for the delicious street food sold at Sunday's Adelaide Night Markets . The following week is the well established Fullarton Plant & Craft Market .

The twice weekly Plant 4 Markets are the newest markets in Adelaide, open on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays for fresh certified organic produce, and delicious locally produced food and wine. Visiting Plant 4 markets will keep you enthralled for at a few hours, and on December 17 don't miss their Gifted Christmas Market with Etsy South Australia.

Other new Adelaide markets are Wayville Market for retro clothes, handmade crafts and artisan goods (next to the Showgrounds Farmers Markets ), and The Market on Flinder s for hard to find antiques and collectibles .

What's On in Adelaide - Free Things to Do
You'll probably need a rest after visiting all the markets in Adelaide as you hunt for Christmas gifts. There aren't a lot of free things to do this month - not a festival in sight! Square Fire at Victoria Square in Adelaide promises to be a colourful spectacle on December 3 and thrilling fun for kids.

There are several free outdoor cinemas through summer, and nearly all have plenty of family entertainment and fun things to do before the movie starts.

With all the Christmas festivities and parties it's easy to put on a few pounds at this time of year. Going cycling for fun in Adelaide will soon remedy that, and free things to do like Cycle Salisbury's regular social rides are fun ways to meet new people.

Terrible Tales of Unley is a new free exhibition at the Unley Museum which uses interactive activities for kids to tell the stories of life in days gone by. Highly recommended.

Not Free, but Fun Things to Do
Obstasplash Adelaide is a novel way to keep cool in summer - catch it for two days only on December 3-4. Also fun for kids is The Elves and the Shoemaker puppet show, again for only 2 days.

Adults can try their hand at a Charcoal Art Workshop , visit the Makers and Shakers Market , or catch some living legends of music at the Wheatsheaf Hotel this month. The more couture conscious should catch their final chance to see the Dressmaker Costume Exhibition at Ayers House Museum before it flees the state.

Other Exciting Things to See and Do in Adelaide
Christmas parties are one of the highlights of the festive season, although not as much fun now that we must behave and act PC. Two new bars in Adelaide will be really popular for Christmas drinks: the Superfish bar and restaurant is the latest in a number of popular bars to occupy the the Little Miss Mexico site, while the Havana Club brings the fresh flavours of tropical Cuba to the heart of Adelaide.

If you're keen to escape the city over the holiday period, try ogling the Historic Mansions of East Terrace , explore the history of Crystal Lake Park on a walk, or head down south to enjoy sea breezes on this Carrickalinga walking trail .
