Summer is the time for being outdoors, enjoying the weather and relaxing in the sun. So if you are in town, you should definitely spend your summer in Sydney, the jewel of Australia. While you're in the city, make sure you check out all of the attractions that even the locals enjoy.

Here are the top five things to do while on a summer holiday in Sydney:

1. Sporting Events

Sport is a universal past time; it has the power to unite people around the world under a banner of friendly competition and entertainment, bridging the gap between language, culture and ethnicity.

Cricket is a classic Australian sport that is very laid back, which means you can relax in the sunny weather with a cold beer. For a great cricketing experience, try to attend the New Years' Day Test Match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

2. Festivals

It seems that hot weather always brings out music festivals of all varieties. If you're into some music that you can dance to until the sun goes down, check out Big Day Out and Good Vibrations, both of which cater to rock and dance music enthusiasts.

If you're into something a little mellower, the Sydney Festival is the perfect summer destination. At the Sydney Festival, there is an eclectic blend of classical, jazz and stage performances that run in a number of venues throughout the city during the summer months.

3. Christmas

For most people in the northern hemisphere, Christmas means snow, toboggans, decorated pine trees and a roaring fire. In Sydney, only the fire remains!

A traditional Christmas in Australia will involve a barbecue with delicious food and an Esky full of beer. December 26th is conveniently a national holiday so everyone can sleep off the collective hangover from Christmas Day.

4. Beaches

Summer time for many people around the world is a time for sun, surf and beach. So why not check out some of Sydney's famous beaches during the summer? The world renowned Bondi Beach is only minutes from the CBD and Cronulla and Manly beaches are just a short drive away.

5. Attractions

Sydney is host to a treasure trove of Australia's cultural heritage. When the weather is nice, walking around the city is more of a treat than a chore, so make sure you hit the streets and explore the richness of Sydney's past. Most public buildings are free to the public and regularly hold art exhibits and scenic tours.

When the temperate starts to rise, Sydney is the place to be. Whether you're into sporting events, music festivals or just a day at the beach, you are sure to fall in love with Sydney in summer time!
