Whether we blame increased international media exposure to programming centered around competitive eating - namely Man vs Food, or just the ever-growing gluttony of human nature, there's no denying the growing trend of food challenges. They're popping up everywhere across Melbourne, and for those who are looking for a list of challenges, you've found the right place.

1. Hofbräuhaus

This German beer hall-inspired establishment situated on Market Lane in the CBD, offers not only a delicious range of German food and of course, beer, but the mighty Schnitzel challenge.

The Challenge: Eat the 1.5 kg pork schnitzel, a bowl of chips, and a litre of any Hofbrauhaus tap beer, within 45 minutes.

The Price: $75

The Prize: Your meal & beer free, and a 'Schitzel Challenge Winner' T-Shirt. Any subsequent time you are seen wearing the shirt at the venue, you will be entitled to a 300ml beer free of charge, per visit.

2. Misty's Diner

Misty's is well known for its authentic American charm; booths with jukeboxes, Twinkies for sale at the counter and Dr. Pepper readily available with whatever burger, hot dog, or other American classic you order. Infamous in its own right however, is the Misty's burger challenge. It brings grown men and women to their knees.

The challenge: In Misty's words - "You have 14 minutes to eat the 5 burgers, 5 slices of cheese, 5 slices of bacon, 3 buns, a whole lotta mayo and BBQ sauce AND.. A 1/2 order of your choice of fries!"

The Price: $35 (Includes 600ml Coke)

The Prize: Your very own Burger Challenge Winner t-shirt, absolutely free, and semi-eternal infamy on the Burger Challenge wall of fame.

3. Donnybrook Hotel

The Donnybrook hotel is a relative newcomer to the food challenge circuit, but they have jumped in head first with their 'Triple Bypass Burger'. Their overflowing challenge burger contains beef patties, steak, chicken schnitzel, potato cakes, eggs, bacon, onions, pineapple, tomato, beetroot, cheese, and a tomato relish. This is certainly an Aussie eating challenge if I ever saw one. At present, according to the Donnybrook's website, this challenge is only available Mon-Thurs at lunchtime, but hopefully with the challenge's growing popularity they'll consider revising this to cater to the masses.

The Challenge: Finish that bad boy.

The Prize: Your own smug satisfaction

4. Outback Jack's

This is for those who want a challenge they can really sink their teeth into (No pun intended... OK, maybe a little pun intended). Outback Jack's has multiple restaurants in Melbourne, although the one I've witnessed this challenge take place at is at Knox in the Ozone dining area. This one comes complete with a waitress dinging a bell in time with your eating commencement.

The Challenge: Eat 1kg of 100 day grain fed, aged rump steak, potato wedges (of unspecified quantity) and steamed vegetables in 30 minutes or less.

The Prize: An Outback Jack's challenge T-Shirt, and your meal free.

The Price: $49.95

5. Captain America's Hamburger Heaven

Another classically American-styled restaurant, Captain America's has all the classics, complete with the best onion rings I've ever eaten, and not to mention Key lime pie (with real Florida Key lime juice). Of course, I'm not here to tell you about that, but rather their meaty eating challenge.

The Challenge: A 1kg burger, served with 600g chips for men, and 300g of chips for ladies.

The Prize: Beat the record (Currently 6 minutes for men, 11 minutes for ladies) and your meal is free, and if you finish within an hour, your name goes on the honour board!

The Price: $28.90

The Place:
Captain America's Hamburger Heaven
38 Forest Rd, Ferntree Gully VIC 3156
