With winter now upon us it's the perfect time of year to stay at home on a Saturday night and watch a movie or three. Here's my list of the top five films for a great movie night.

Anchorman

I reckon Anchorman would have to be one of the most quoted movies of all time. Will Ferrell's top-rated San Diego newsman and his colleagues managed to churn out so many memorable one-liners it's hard to believe this movie has a running time of only an hour-and-a-half.

In the male-dominated newsrooms of the 1970s, Ron Burgundy and the channel 4 news team rule the roost. But when ambitious female reporter Veronica Corningstone (AKA Tits McGee) arrives in the office, all that is set to change.

From the street fight between warring news teams (including legally retarded weatherman Brick Tamland killing an opponent with a trident) to the "Mr Burgundy, you have a massive erection" scene, there's so many funny moments in this film. It'll have you chuckling all night long.

Memorable Quote: Too many to choose from, but... "I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal. People know me. I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany."

Die Hard

You can't have a "best movies" list without including Die Hard. This is one of those rare films that gets better every time you watch it. There's so much to like about this movie: Bruce Willis at his wise-cracking tough guy best, a bad guy named Hans Gruber (best name for a super-villain ever) and a whole lot of gratuitous violence.

I'm sure most of you have already seen it so a plot summary is hardly necessary, but in a nutshell, New York City detective John McClane must overcome heavily armed terrorists who are holding his wife and the staff of an LA office building hostage. If you've never seen it before, settle in for a night of action and discover why Die Hard has spawned so many sequels (Die Hard 5 is coming soon).

Memorable Quote: "Yippee-ki-yay, motherf$%^&r"

The Silence Of The Lambs

There's something about The Silence of The Lambs that just scares the crap out of me. It's a creepy, atmospheric film that sticks with you long after the credits have finished rolling.

Anthony Hopkins as former psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter is impressively creepy. His performance is even more remarkable when you consider he's only actually on-screen for a little over 16 minutes, yet he's one of the most famous horror movie characters of all time.

One of the most chilling movies you're ever likely to see.

Memorable Quote: "It rubs the lotion on its skin."

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Time to step away from Hollywood for a minute and watch a cracking British film. Before marrying and later divorcing Madonna, Guy Ritchie directed this very violent, very funny crime caper.

When four mates end up half a million pounds in debt to a crime lord, they've got one week to come up with the cash. It's fast, has plenty of twists, and the one-liners come thick and fast. Great fun for any movie night.

Memorable Quote: "A minute ago this was the safest job in the world. Now it's turning into a bad day in Bosnia."

Happy Gilmore

OK, so I know Adam Sandler isn't everyone's cup of tea and has churned out some real stinkers over the past few years, but this film is an absolute classic.

Everyone loves a good sports movie, and when the protagonist is a struggling hockey player with anger management problems who tries his hand at golf, it's comedy gold.

From the Bob Barker fight scene to Happy's ongoing verbal sparring with Shooter McGavin ("you eat pieces of sh*t for breakfast?"), there's a lot to enjoy. Add it to the list on your next movie night and you won't be disappointed.
