There is never a dull moment in the city of culture, and these top 12 annual events are testament to this element of truth. Every year there are many subtle differences in these events, so if you were to attend the same event year in and year out, you will always (in most cases) have a great day out.

These annual events (not in order of preference) will enable you to continue to enjoy 2012 and what Melbourne has to offer when it comes to events.

1. Melbourne Food and Wine Festival

Enjoy quality cooking demonstrations where you will get an opportunity to sample some interesting and unique culinary delights, as well as sample some quality wine. 2. Moomba

This annual event is really great for families. The children will be entertained with a variety of different rides and music and other street entertainment along the Yarra. Melbourne just isn't Melbourne without the Moomba festival, and is definitely one of Melbourne's longest running annual events.

3. Run For The Kids

Melbourne is also the city of sport, and therefore us Melburnians love to get involved in annual sporting events of this nature. 4. Mothers Day Classic

The Mothers Day Classic is another fun run annual event that has made its mark in Melbourne in order to raise much needed funds for Breast Cancer research. Choose from the 4km or the 8km run or walks on the morning of mothers day, and enjoy the rest of the day with your mum.

5. Million Paws Walk

The Million Paws Walk comprises of entertainment and fun for families with their four legged friends raising much needed funds for RSPCA animal shelters. This event is held around Victoria. The Melbourne locations that come to mind include Albert Park Lake and the Mornington Peninsula.

6. Good Food and Wine Show

Come to the Good Food and Wine Show hungry. Expect to sample a variety of different culinary delights. Some of Australia's most famous chefs put on a show in producing some of their best dishes. Goodies are also available for purchase to enjoy afterwards.

7. Melbourne Open House

The Melbourne Open House is put on to allow locals and visitors to Melbourne alike to explore and discover more about the unique historical buildings around the city. Great for architects and non-architects alike.

8. Melbourne International Film Festival

The Melbourne International Film Festival is now in it 61st year, and if you love films, you will be in for a real treat. A gigantic film festival featuring films from more than 50 countries. A great springboard for established and emerging film artists alike.

9. 30 Days of Fashion and Beauty

September is fashion and beauty month, where makeovers and discount fashion shopping is on the agenda. You can register for just one or attend as many fashion events that you can handle right around Melbourne. Further information can be found by clicking here.

10. Royal Melbourne Show

Even better than Sydney's Royal Easter Show, the Royal Melbourne Show brings he best of the bush to the city. Get as close as you want to the farm animals, and even pet them if you wish. Great entertainment and quality showbags are on offer.

11. Queen Victoria Night Market

Experience and enjoy a range of different foods from different cultures. Enjoy some quality Australian wines with music and entertainment every Wednesday night from mid November, right through to the end of summer. Welcome to the Queen Victoria Night Market.

12. Carols By Candlelight

Christmas Eve attracts more than 10,000 Melburnians to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The queues do get quite lengthy. Enjoy a range of contemporary and traditional carols tunes, and the proceeds of this event go to Vision Australia.
