American singer-songwriter-guitarist
Tony Joe White (aka "The Swamp Fox") is heading downunder for a series of concerts in Australia and New Zealand from 7th March until 1st April, 2013.
To his fans he needs no introduction however if you don't know him, he's kind of hard to classify. Youtube lists his music genre as Blues, Country, Bayou. His music has also been described as "swamp music and "swamp rock". Whatever you want to label it, it's the kind of music that stays with you and doesn't wear out its welcome no matter how many times you listen to it.
Tony Joe White grew up on a cotton farm in Louisiana and has often quoted Lightin' Hopkins amongst others as influencing his music. His best known song is Polk Salad Annie from way back in the 60's. Rainy Night in Georgia and Steamy Windows are also his compositions although Brook Benton and Tina Turner's versions respectively are better known. Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Etta James, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, and Dusty Springfield have all recorded his songs.
He's an excellent storyteller and spins some amazing tales ranging from haunting to jaunty. His website currently has a free download on offer of "Season Man" from his album
The Shine.
His tour of Australia and New Zealand starts in Victoria, swings through New South Wales, New Zealand, South Australia, back to Victoria and then back to New South Wales for the Deni Blues & Roots Festival and East Coast Blues & Roots Festival. He has a loyal following so book early if you want to see this master of cool. Tickets are available from
