If you have never been to The Three Monkeys you can hardly call yourself a citizen of Brisbane. By this definition I have only recently achieved citizenship myself. But since I moved back to Australia less than a month ago and have been there three times already, I think I have done an excellent job of making up for lost time.

The size of the place is deceiving when you first arrive, but once through the door you find yourself in a low-ceilinged, cosily lit restaurant filled with tables of chattering customers. This favourite haunt of Brisbane youths is a jumble of smaller rooms joined together, with a mix of tables and booths, and includes an outdoor courtyard. The walls are covered in posters of theatrical productions and obscure memorabilia, some of which can be quite entertaining, especially after a high dose of sugar.

I have only been there for dessert and drinks so far, but they also serve dinner which, judging by my snooping of fellow diner's tables, is both a popular option and delicious (or maybe just well presented). For tea lovers this is a great place to go, they've even won awards for their expertise in that area. If you're having dessert, be prepared to um and ah in front of the cake cabinet for a fair while. The display case is full to the brim of delicious looking treats; a variety of cheesecakes, a range of chocolate choices (including a flourless, gluten free option) and many more. I particularly love the Carrot Cake, with its moist sponge and creamy icing.
