I remember the days when the Bank Road shops in Graceville were the stock-standard combination of convenience store, hairdresser, fish and chip shop and chemist. On a recent visit to my childhood stomping ground I was shocked to see how much had changed; there is an amazing fruit shop/deli, two fancy restaurants and, the focus of this article, café-patisserie Three Girls Skipping.
Three Girls Skipping has a menu full of deliciously comforting dishes such as soups, tarts and terrines, as well as an amazing selection of sweet things which may make you skip the savoury part of the meal altogether. French pastry chef, Denis Gusto, is whipping up éclairs, croissants and every other delicious treat that has word associations with French and pastry. And, at the risk of sparking the age-old macaron versus macaroons debate, Gusto is creating absolutely delicious versions of one or the other – I'm pretty sure it's macarons, but you'd better visit the café just to be sure.
