'Thread Songs' Handmade & Tribal Textile Exhibition

'Thread Songs' is the annual exhibition and sale of handmade and tribal textiles at Adventuress Gallery in Hyde Park.



Traveller and ex-TV producer and archaeologist Keryn James travelled to the deserts of Pakistan for beautiful handmade and vintage patchwork quilts made by tribal Meghwar women and silk Ajrahk scarves made with madder and pomegranates using 2000-year-old traditions.

Her travels around India found embroideries, tie dyed scarves and little Kutchi dolls in Gujarat, kantha quilts, scarves and bags stitched with thousands of tiny stitches in Calcutta and in Rajasthan, she found contemporary textile artists and bought brightly hand printed silk scarves and shibori tied and dyed bags and shawls.



There is also tribal clothing, beautiful dowry items and museum pieces as Keryn's passion is textiles with the patterns and symbols worked in threads by tribal women that sing their song of identity. These symbols and traditions are handed down from generation to generation and are rapidly disappearing as education and modernisation grow.



Keryn is particularly proud of the completely hand-stitched felt babies booties made by women at the Thrive Seed School in the slums of Delhi. Keryn volunteered there for 2 weeks teaching embroidery and the women asked to exhibit their handmade shoes made during Women Empowerment classes. The money earned helps their families and gives the women some independence.



Lovers of textiles have two weeks to catch this event at Adventuress; it will run from Saturday 3rd to Sunday 18 May, 2014.
