There's something a bit magical about panto. For many of us it was our fiest taste of live theatre. I can remember vividly falling as deeply in love as it's only possible for an eight year old boy to do with the georgeus girl playing Alladin in Alladin on Ice.

And Wishy and Washy, so funny with the rickshaw.

But at any age there is something to enjoy in seeing a much-loved childhood tale retold with popular songs, an adult joke or two, a few dances and a man dressed up as a totally unconvincing woman.

Christmas is the usual time and this year Old Mill Theatre is rolling out an enchanting family version of The Wizard of Oz.

Director Maree Grayden says "In this British version, Dorothy and Toto are joined by Aunt Em as they travel to Emerald City to gain the wizard's help to return to Kansas."On the way, they are joined by Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Man – and Elvis Presley, who has been touring Oz and can't find his way home."

Director Grayden has cast some of Perth's most talented actors mixed with new and emerging talent in a mix of mentors and less-experienced. "I have doubled the number of munchkin and monkey roles to give as many opportunities as possible for young people to tread the boards," she said.

Bree Vreedenburgh is musical director and Mel Davies, of Bounce Funk Dance Company, is the company choreographer.

The main challenge with The Wizard of Oz is balancing the original story with the pantomime elements in a seamless whole.

The Wizard of Oz runs from November 28th to December 12th with three matinees.

Tickets cost $30, ($25 concession), Children (aged up to 10) $20 and $90 for a family (2 adults and 2 children) – book online or ring 9367 8719.

The heritage-listed Old Mill Theatre is on the corner of Mends Street and Mill Point Road, South Perth (opposite the Windsor Hotel and Australia Post).
