Yesterday saw me wandering across the Green in Richmond to meet up with friends at The White Swan.

Tucked away down Old Palace Lane, this pub has graced Richmond-ians with its warmth and hospitality since 1777. As some of you might know, it took the English until 1788 to stake their claim on Australia's shores but with this little gem already in your pocket, I am surprised you even bothered.

We started our afternoon with a few drinks outdoors ...

Despite the grey day and a few spots of rain outside, our table by the window was cosy and warm and it wasn't long before we were casting a ravenous eye over the lunchtime menu. Reliably informed by the website that the chef is Michelin star trained, I was delighted to be spoiled for choice - particularly being a non-red meat eater - and my starter of goats cheese and artichoke salad followed by Atlantic salmon were really delicious.

Several at the table ordered the beef pie which looked amazing and although I had earlier been tempted by (but not chosen) the prawn starter and the main of pea and risotto cakes, both were ordered by my companions so I was able to try them anyway. Simply scrumptious!

Service was friendly and efficient (we were due to be at Twickenham later so we were 'managed' rather well) without being overbearing and we got away in plenty of time.

The White Swan in Richmond definitely gets the nod from this erstwhile Aussie. Local produce (including British meat and sustainably sourced seafood), a great atmosphere and a little slice of English history just off the beaten track. Just brilliant!
