Newtown is a suburb known for its progressive views on environmental policy. So, it is no surprise that the
Watershed Sustainability Resource Centre can be found on the iconic King Street.
Open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, the Watershed is a meeting point for all those who are concerned about the environment. Established by the
City of Sydney and
Marrickville Council, the Watershed focuses on the environmental possibilities in an urban environment.
The Watershed not only possesses a library, but also runs free workshops, educational, and business programs, run out of the Newtown-based shopfront. Since 2002, the Watershed has sought to educate residents on the benefits of living a greener lifestyle.
Apart from the library, there are a number of resources available
online, including worm farming, energy conservation, eco choices for sustainable living, and rainwater harvesting.
The resources not only provide advice, but also recommend that users estimate their own
"ecological footprint" in order to estimate how much land and water area is consumed by each individual.
The Watershed even has a
Bike Library, containing specialist cargo bikes designed to assist environmentally conscious visitors to carry less convenient cargo.
But, it is undoubtedly the
workshops that attract the most traffic from visitors seeking to better themselves.
