A supper club is a dining establishment that serves a social function as well as a culinary one. Supper clubs typically keep longer hours to encourage patrons to stay for the whole evening.
The Villager Hotel (
195 George Street, Brisbane) is Brisbane's newest supper club.
The Villager is a cosy, two story country style establishment housed in a century old building. It is an atypical Brisbane eatery that combines several different culinary ideologies; it is a fine dining restaurant, a late night supper club and a gastro and cocktail bar.
The downstairs kitchen opens at 7.00am and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Upstairs houses the supper lounge, a late night restaurant and cocktail bar open from 9.00pm until 3.00am. A separate supper club menu provides inexpensive finger food and an extensive range of cocktails and premium wine and champagne, as well as the standard spirits.
The food is simple but a little fancy or, as co-owner Nell Shannon puts it, 'traditional comfort food you know and love, tarted up just enough to give it an edge.' The downstairs menu includes entrees, mains, sides, desserts and tapas selections, while the upstairs menu features a small selection of bite sized treats and six pages of alcoholic options.
The club has become popular with late night/early morning patrons who gather to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat, but the bare, wooden floorboards and walls means that the place is noisy even when it's not particularly crowded. Some may enjoy this busy atmosphere, others will not.
