If someone tells you there's "an underground picture house operating below an East End pub", your mind might conjure up images of dark corners and a leaky roof, with an old projector noisily spinning away while the audience tries to get comfortable on threadbare seats with little legroom.
But wait -
The Underground Picturehouse in Spitalfields, which lies below
The Water Poet pub, is none of these things. Oh contraire. This place boasts state-of-the-art tech (ie. a decent sound system and projection equipment) that would put some of the capital's indie cinemas to shame.
And what's more, instead of cramped seats that can leave taller members of society sitting with their knees up around their ears, this place has sofas. Lovely, comfy sofas. The only problem with a sofa in a cinema is that it might be so cosy that you find yourself drifting off to sleep.
Being situated under a pub makes its location perfect for pre- or post-movie liquid sustenance. The organisers of The Underground Picturehouse love their movies, and this is made clear in their carefully chosen wide-ranging line-up of movies.
Recent screenings have included superb double bills such as
Being John Malkovich and
Adaptation,
The Rules of Attraction and
American Psycho, and
Memento and
Inception.

Wednesday 5th October 2011 - For just a fiver, you can enjoy Jean-Pierre Jeunet's fabulous
Amelie. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
Sunday 9th October 2011 - A double bill, this one sees
Pan's Labyrinth paired with
Let the Right One In. Tickets cost £8; doors open 5.30pm for a 6pm start.
Wednesday 19th October 2011 sees another film for a fiver, this time the classic
Withnail And I. Doors open at 6.30pm.
Sunday 23rd October 2011 is another double bill for the bargain basement price of £8. The movies? Dario Argento's
Suspiria and Neil Marshall's
The Descent.
Monday 31st October 2011 is of course, Halloween - so The Underground Picturehouse have opted for
The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tickets cost a fiver and doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Don't forget to dress up.
